  • Why Does My Camera Keep Losing Its Wi-Fi Connection?

There are two main reasons that a camera may lose its Wi-Fi connection. It may be installed too far from your Wi-Fi router, or it may not have sufficient bandwidth.

If Your Camera Will Not Connect to Wi-Fi During Initial Setup

If you are having trouble connecting your camera to Wi-Fi during a first-time setup, we recommend making sure that your home network is configured to meet our system requirements.

    • Your Wi-Fi network must be broadcasting 2.4GHz

      • SimpliSafe® cannot connect to 5GHz networks

    • Your SSID and password cannot exceed more than 31 characters each

    • Your network must be configured as WPA2 or WPA3/2 Mixed Mode

      • WPA3 only networks are not compatible with SimplISafe® at this time

Cox and Xfinity default their network security settings to the WPA3 protocol. To connect the Base Station to Wi-Fi, you’ll need to temporarily change this to WPA2. Once these devices are set up, you can change this setting back to WPA3.

COX subscribers will need to reach out to their Internet Service Provider to temporarily switch the network from WPA3 to WPA2 security.

Xfinity subscribers using the Xfinity gateway should be able to make these changes within the Xfinity Mobile App:

    1. Click on Wi-Fi from the bottom menu

    2. Select Wi-Fi Details

    3. Choose Edit Wi-Fi Settings

    4. Under Security Mode, change this setting to WPA2

    5. Tap Save to save your changes

If Your Camera Will Not Connect After Its Setup

If your camera had previously been set up but is now failing to connect to your Wi-Fi network, the Connection Check tool in the SimpliSafe® mobile app will tell you if there are any issues between your network and camera.

How to Run a Connection Check:

    1. Open the SimpliSafe® Mobile App

    2. Tap on the Cameras tab on the bottom of the screen

    3. Select the gear icon in the upper right corner

    4. Choose your camera

    5. Select Connection Check and follow the on-screen instructions to test your signal strength and upload speeds

Using your results, you can improve your camera’s connection with the tips below.

    Camera Wi-Fi Requirements:

    • Signal strength should be above -55dBm. A lower number means a weaker connection between your camera and Wi-Fi router

    • Upload speeds need to be above 2Mbps

      • If your upload speed is below 2Mbps, you may need to contact your internet service provider to upgrade your internet package.

  • Video Doorbell Pro Overview and Installation Guide

    Overview

The Video Doorbell Pro integrates seamlessly with your SimpliSafe® system, allowing you to see visitors and interact with them through its live streaming and two-way audio features, without needing to be home.

If you are subscribed to either our residential or business plans such as, Pro Plus, Pro, Core, or Self Monitoring with Camera Recordings, the Video Doorbell Pro will record video when motion is detected, and those recordings will be stored in your account for 30 days. These recordings can be downloaded from the SimpliSafe® Mobile App or Online Account.

The Video Doorbell Pro detects motion using advanced motion analytics during the day to recognize cars, people, and other objects. At night, the Video Doorbell Pro uses passive infrared (PIR) to detect moving, heat-generating objects in contrast to the environment. Since it is looking for warmer objects, you may see an uptick of motion events from the Video Doorbell Pro during the colder months.

Looking to purchase a Video Doorbell Pro? You can find it available for purchase on our website.

    Video Doorbell Pro Requirements

Before installing your Video Doorbell Pro, it’s important to know that the device requires:

    • Existing doorbell wiring

    • A mechanical chime. The Video Doorbell Pro is not compatible with digital chimes

    • A transformer with 8-24VAC, 10-30VA

    • A Chime Connector. If you do not have a Chime Connector, please reach out to our Support team for one

Failure to meet these requirements may result in damage to your device and/or your home. If you’re unsure if your system meets these requirements, we recommend contacting a licensed electrician.

You can test the voltage of your doorbell using a multimeter or voltage tester. If you're unsure of how to do this, please consult with a licensed electrician in your area for further assistance.

    Before Getting Started

You will need to have a 2.4GHz network connection available to complete the setup of this camera.

    What’s in the box:

    • Video Doorbell Pro

    • Angled mount

    • Mounting bracket

    • Chime Connector

    • Security Screw

    • Torx screwdriver

    • Mounting bracket screws

    • Wood screws

    • Wall anchors

You’ll also need to have your own Phillips Head screwdriver to complete the installation.

Add the Video Doorbell Pro in the SimpliSafe® Mobile App

    1. Open the SimpliSafe® Mobile App on your smartphone or tablet

    2. Navigate to the three-bar menu on the upper left corner and select Add Device or Camera

    3. Select Video Doorbell Pro from the list of available products

    Remove Your Existing Doorbell

    1. Turn off the power to your existing doorbell at the circuit breaker

      1. To locate the correct circuit breaker switch, try turning off each switch one at a time and pressing your doorbell to confirm that it does not ring, indicating that it is off

    2. Locate your doorbell’s chime box and remove its cover. A chime box is a device that is installed inside of your home, usually near a ceiling, and produces a sound when the doorbell is rung

    3. Follow the in-app instructions to install your Chime Connector

      1. The Chime Connector is a wiring extension that ensures enough power flows between the Video Doorbell Pro and mechanical chime box

    4. After you install the Chime Connector, you will need to uninstall your existing doorbell by removing its screws and disconnecting its wiring

    5. Once the wires have been removed from the doorbell, tape them to the door frame or wrap them tightly around a pencil to prevent them from falling into the wall

    Install the Mounting Bracket

If you have angled siding or want to tilt the Video Doorbell Pro up or down, install the included vertical bracket underneath the mounting bracket to ensure the Video Doorbell Pro captures your desired view.

If you want to install the Video Doorbell Pro flat on your surface, refer to the steps below to install the mounting bracket.

    1. Hold the mounting bracket up to the surface and use a pencil to mark where you want to place the screws

      1. If you are installing the Video Doorbell Pro on a brick, stone, or stucco surface, you will need to install wall anchors next

        1. Drill 2 pilot holes into the wall using a 3/16 inch drill bit

        2. Gently tap the wall anchors into the wall using a hammer or mallet

    2. Thread the doorbell wiring through the center of the mounting bracket

    3. Remove the cardboard Clearance marker off the mounting bracket

    4. Secure the mounting bracket to the surface using a philips head screwdriver and the included screws

Connect the Doorbell Wiring to the Mounting Bracket

    1. Use a screwdriver to loosen both terminal screws on the mounting bracket

    2. Slide the exposed wires behind the square washers. We recommend placing the wire ends to the left of each screw to prevent them from touching

    3. Tighten the terminal screws to secure the wires in place

Attach the Video Doorbell Pro to the Mounting Bracket

    1. Place the Video Doorbell Pro on the mounting bracket and slide it down until it clicks into place

    2. Remove the protective film from the camera's lens

    3. Once the Video Doorbell Pro is attached to the mounting bracket, turn the power back on at the circuit breaker

    4. Wait up to 10 minutes for the Video Doorbell Pro to power up. You’ll know the doorbell has sufficient power when it begins to blink white, indicating that it is ready to be paired to the system

    5. Press its doorbell button to confirm it chimed

      1. If your doorbell did not chime, it could be due to the following reasons:

        1. Your doorbell setup does not align with our requirements.

          1. We require a doorbell transformer with an output of 8-24 VAC, 10-30 VA and a digital chime box

        2. The Chime Connector has not been installed properly

      2. If your doorbell did not chime and the LED light doesn’t blink white, turn off the power at your circuit breaker and ensure that the doorbell wiring is secure to the mounting bracket

Connect the Video Doorbell Pro to Wi-Fi

    1. The SimpliSafe® Mobile App will next prompt you to confirm the location you are installing the Video Doorbell Pro at and select the Wi-Fi network you are connecting it to

    2. You will next be asked to name the Video Doorbell Pro by picking one of our pre-selected names or selecting Custom Name to input your own

    3. Your phone’s screen will then display a QR code for your Video Doorbell Pro to scan to connect to your Wi-Fi network

      1. If the QR code does not scan, refer to the Why Won’t My QR Code Scan article in the Help Center

Enroll the Video Doorbell Pro in Active Guard Outdoor Protection

If you are subscribed to either our Pro Plus or Pro monitoring plans, you will then be prompted to enroll your Video Doorbell Pro in Active Guard Outdoor Protection. If you do not want to enroll your camera now, you may always do so at a later time.

Secure the Video Doorbell Pro to the Mounting Bracket

    1. Finally, you will need to secure the Video Doorbell Pro it its bracket using the included security screw and Torx screwdriver

    2. Insert the security screw to the bottom of the Video Doorbell Pro and then use the Torx screwdriver to tighten it in place

      1. Note: you must use the included Torx screwdriver; failure to do so could strip the security screw and damage the Video Doorbell Pro’s battery

  • Video Doorbell Pro Stopped Working

When the Video Doorbell Pro detects motion and begins to record, a steady blue light should appear as a ring around the button. Triggering a motion event is a good first step to determining if the Video Doorbell Pro is responsive and receiving power.

If your Video Doorbell Pro has power and is responsive, but isn’t working in the app – you’d want to further troubleshoot the Wi-Fi connectivity. If your Video Doorbell Pro appears to not have power or is unresponsive, this guide is for you. You’ll want to start by confirming your home or business meets the Video Doorbell Pro requirements. After that, continue section by section until your issue is resolved.

    Video Doorbell Pro Requirements

The Video Doorbell Pro has a set of specific requirements in order to function. Not meeting these requirements can result in the Video Doorbell Pro not working out the gate, or for it to cease functioning after a period of time.

    • Existing doorbell wiring

    • A mechanical chime. Not compatible with digital chimes.

    • A transformer with 8-24VAC, 10-30VA

If your existing doorbell meets these requirements, it’s important to check the wiring and contacts, and the pins from your mounting plate and Video Doorbell Pro faceplate to ensure that things are connecting properly.

    Checking the Wiring and Contacts:

    1. First, cut power to the breaker for your doorbell, to ensure no power is going to it

    2. Remove the Video Doorbell Pro faceplate by using releasing the security screw on the bottom of it with its included screwdriver

    3. Ensure that proper contact is being made between the terminals/contacts and the wiring from your existing doorbell

      1. You can adjust the wiring by loosening the screws to adjust the wiring

Checking the pins Between the Mounting Plate and Video Doorbell Pro:

    1. First, cut power to the breaker for your doorbell, to ensure no power is going to it

    2. Remove the Video Doorbell Pro faceplate by using releasing the security screw on the bottom of it with its included screwdriver

    3. Ensure that the mounting plate isn’t too tight, or bending. This can prevent solid contact between the mounting plate and the gold pins on the backside of the Video Doorbell Pro

      1. If the plate is bending, slightly loosen the screws

    4. Ensure that the pins are all there, without any bends to them. Do not touch the pins, but simply observe them with your eyes – they are delicate!

    Performing a Soft Reset

Performing a soft reset on the Video Doorbell Pro can help clear it from an unresponsive state, and will also test that the device has power.

    To perform a soft reset:

    1. Remove the Video Doorbell Pro from its faceplate by releasing the security screw on the bottom of the device with its included Torx screwdriver

    2. Press and hold the larger button on the back of the Video Doorbell Pro for 30 seconds and then release it

    3. After about one minute, the camera will reboot and go into setup mode

    4. Secure the Video Doorbell Pro to the mounting plate once more, and insert the security screw using your screwdriver

    5. You should see a solid yellow LED light come on, followed by a flashing white light with audible cues to get started

    6. Open the SimpliSafe® Mobile App on your phone or tablet

    7. You’ll now choose the Setup Camera prompt, or use our installation guide for step-by-step instructions on adding your camera back to your system

    Performing a Factory Reset

If normal troubleshooting and a soft reset do not resolve the issues with your Video Doorbell Pro, you’ll want to try performing a factory reset on the device to flash it back to factory settings.

    To perform a factory reset:

    1. Remove the Video Doorbell Pro from its faceplate by releasing the security screw on the bottom of the device with its included Torx screwdriver

    2. Press and release the smaller button on the back of the Video Doorbell Pro

    3. Secure the Video Doorbell Pro to the mounting plate once more, and insert the security screw using your screwdriver

    4. The LED on the Video Doorbell Pro should change to a solid yellow light

    5. If the Video Doorbell Pro was previously connected to Wi-Fi, it should automatically reconnect to the app

    6. If the Video Doorbell Pro does not reconnect, open the SimpliSafe® Mobile App on your phone or tablet

    7. You’ll now choose the Setup Camera prompt, or use our installation guide for step-by-step instructions on adding your camera back to your system

  • My Doorbell Won't Ring

When the Video Doorbell Pro is rung, you can hear it from two different places: the doorbell’s chime and the Base Station. If you do not hear a chime from one or both of these places, follow the troubleshooting steps below.

The Doorbell Chime Does Not Ring, or the Chime is Incomplete

If the Video Doorbell Pro doesn’t ring your chime, or the chime only “dings” but does not “dong”, that indicates that you may need a Chime Connector, which is an additional device to make sure enough power is sent to the Video Doorbell Pro.
